“Arch and company don’t write the same song twice and yet the consistency in quality of material is staggeringly high for a group that takes so many turns and chances.” -Daytrotter

After six months of 3-song ep’s and videos, the day of reckoning has finally arrived. Illinois is taking all the songs and all the video chapters, wrapping them up with a little bow and releasing them all in one sh’bang. diagnosed the band with ‘stylistic schizophrenia’ – which is to say, there is something here for everyone: a manic mix of banjo-laced saloon anthems, hip hop beats, rip-roaring electric guitar riffs, and tender acoustic soul-searching – traversing fresh genre terrain seemingly with every passing track. The Courier Times writes, “The result is an approach as clever, quirky and borderline ludicrous as the band itself.”

Throughout the process, the ‘Kid Catastrophe’ project took on a life of its own. Songs were revealing themselves in different ways. ‘An Open Door’ was a last-second addition to the project thanks to a fortuitous appearance on the +1 Records office iTunes shuffle and one particularly aware staffer. Arch wrote ‘How Do You Feel’ for an imeem feature showing him getting ready for SXSW. Both tracks garnered some of the strongest love from fans and critics alike, and went on to be 2 of the best-selling B-sides.

This blue-collar outfit from Bucks County, PA, however, measures success in a very different way. Says bandleader Chris ‘Arch’ Archibald (aka Kid Catastrophe): “If I could just tour around and be with my best friends and do music — hell, yeah… But I’m not out for the fame or the money or the glory. I just wanna pay my cell phone bill on time.”

‘The Adventures of Kid Catastrophe’ was tailored specifically to marry Illinois’ prolific supply of material with the infinite demand of webspace, running video exclusives and mp3 downloads on various digital outlets. Exclusive mp3 debuts ran through the course of this campaign at The Tripwire, Rcrd Lbl, CMJ, and The Music Slut. ‘Hang On’ in particular got so much attention it made it up to #6 in the blog aggregator ‘Hot Tracks’ chart. Notable video premieres included,,, Imeem and Baeble. At their recent run at SXSW, KEXP found out more about this unique project with an in-studio session and interview.

Illinois has truly embraced the internet with this project, and now, the internet is hugging back. iTunes is honoring the culmination of the series by making Illinois their ‘Indie Spotlight’ featured artist today: Imeem made the band its ‘Featured Playlist’ on their homepage yesterday, including spoken intros for every track by Kid Catastrophe himself, providing a bit of insight on where these songs came from. PureVolume is also featuring the project on their main page, offering ‘Kid Catastrophe’ as a free mp3 download. Daytrotter just featured the band for the second time yesterday with a few tracks the band recorded while they were on tour last month.
